UVA Financial Aid

In this 1-minute explainer animation for the University of Virginia, 160over90 described the school’s financial aid offerings. The challenge was to engage both prospective students as well as their parents with a topic that is often dry and ordinary. The solution was a bold, graphic visual style and fun, simple motion mechanics to present each idea in an interesting way.

Initial visual concepts and storyboards were created based on a rough draft of the script. Style reference images and animations as well as a written treatment were presented to UVA for their approval on 160’s direction. Styleframes were designed based on the approved storyboards. I created a styleframe for each scene in the animation, and built each character and element so they would easily translate into After Effects for animation. This was the first project that I attemped to use Adobe Cloud storage for, and, although I did not have any major mishaps, I would not recommend using it for sharing across a team. The way the cloud files are stored temporarily makes it too easy to confuse versions and lose assets when collecting a project.
